About the Author

I started showing English Setters in 1982, following all the rules; premium commercial dog foods, vaccinations every year, the latest chemicals to keep them free of fleas. Then I lost my first two English Setters at ages 10 and 6 to cancer. That's quite a blow when you think you are doing everything right.

I had always changed brands of premium commercial foods quite frequently because I was never quite satisfied. At some point, I started to wonder if the problem wasn't one of something lacking from the diet but rather excesses in these foods. Then in 1996, someone pointed me to Dr. Ian Billinghurst's book, "Give Your Dog A Bone". I read it in one afternoon and was just amazed. I thought all along what I've been looking for does not come in a bag. It comes from my grocery store! I quickly wrote out a plan and switched my first dog.

Over the next couple of years, I helped many, many people get started and found they were asking the same questions - they wanted spelled-out details on what to buy, how to store, a menu plan, what to use for supplements - and from there came "Switching to Raw".

Here are the raw fed "Birchrun" girls:
